About this opportunity

CXOwork clients are looking for experienced CFO-level advisors who can help drive financial strategy, planning, and performance management while bringing rigor to decision-making in growing businesses.

This is a fractional leadership role designed for finance leaders who combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution — helping companies improve visibility, optimize financial performance, and prepare for growth, fundraising, or transformation.

We are looking to build a CFO bench from different industries — Fintech; Insurance & Insurtech; Healthcare & life sciences; AI & machine learning; Cybersecurity; Manufacturing & industrials; Logistics & supply chain; Climate-tech & clean energy; Consumer goods, retail & fashion; and Public sector & defence are all in active rotation. Different industries demand different financial leadership — regulated accounting and capital-adequacy reporting, capital-intensive manufacturing economics, inventory and gross-margin discipline, grant and public-fund management — and our clients want CFOs who have actually owned the P&L their business model runs on. If your career sits outside the venture-backed SaaS playbook, that depth is exactly what we're looking for.

Core responsibilities

  • Advise founders and leadership teams on financial strategy, planning, and growth decisions — translating numbers into business choices the CEO and board can act on
  • Develop financial models, forecasts, and operating plans aligned with business objectives; provide strategic guidance on pricing, profitability, and capital allocation
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management; build and track KPIs, dashboards, and performance metrics that drive data-driven decision-making
  • Lead the financial side of fundraising — financial storytelling, investor diligence, data rooms, and investor materials; guide leadership through funding rounds, investor conversations, and board reporting
  • Improve financial processes, reporting systems, and operational discipline; establish internal controls, compliance frameworks, and governance structures
  • Optimize financial workflows across accounting, reporting, and analysis; manage relationships with auditors, banking partners, and outside advisors
  • Guide companies through growth phases, restructuring, or cost optimization; support financial planning during expansion, M&A, or strategic pivots
  • Build a scalable finance function aligned with company stage — controller, FP&A, accounting — and the bench that lets the founder hire a full-time CFO when the moment is right

Required qualifications

  • 15+ years in finance leadership; former or current CFO, VP Finance, Finance Director, or senior finance leader
  • Experience working with startups, SMEs, or growth-stage companies — comfortable as the sole senior finance resource
  • Strong background in financial strategy, planning, reporting, and governance
  • Track record taking a company from Series A or B through Series C, D, or a transaction (acquisition, secondary, IPO)
  • Strong command of GAAP, audit readiness, three-statement modeling, and unit-economics financial models
  • Hands-on with the modern finance stack (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Carta, Mosaic, Pigment, or comparable)
  • Comfortable working directly with CEOs, founders, boards, and institutional investors
  • Ability to walk into a messy finance function and turn it into something predictable, auditable, and board-ready

Nice to have

Not required — but will strengthen your match quality.

  • CPA, CFA, or MBA from a top-tier institution
  • Investment banking or Big 4 accounting background (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, KPMG, EY, Deloitte, PwC)
  • M&A close experience — buy-side or sell-side, including post-close integration
  • IPO readiness work — SOX implementation, S-1 drafting, investor relations setup
  • International or multi-entity consolidation experience (transfer pricing, R&D credits, cross-border tax)
  • Prior fractional, interim, or consulting CFO experience

Compensation & benefits

  • Flexible engagement structures: fractional (ongoing part-time advisory), project-based (fundraise prep, controls setup, model build), advisory (strategic input on specific initiatives), or interim (acting CFO for a defined period)
  • Remote-first, async-first — sync only for strategic reviews and board / investor sessions
  • Dedicated CXOwork Success Manager to support engagement health and unblock you when needed
  • Access to the CXOwork Advisor Community: fractional CFO roundtables, benchmark data, and peer insights
